How to Make Cat Furniture

You may wonder how to make cat furniture since you know that your pet needs somewhere to scratch, sleep and laze around. This furniture can be expensive if store-bought, and, since it will be abused by your pet, it is best to make your own. Plus, this will allow you to customize the space just for your kitty.

Cat Scratch Posts

While cats need to scratch, you probably don’t want them scratching up your furniture, which is why you will need to give them a cat scratch post. It is easy to build these at home out of things like old boxes and wood if you have a smaller cat. Here you can glue different types of boxes together to allow them to have a jungle gym; just make sure that you secure everything in place with either sisal rope or a really strong glue. You can also add old, high grade carpet remnants if you have any laying around.

Cat Houses

Do you have an old dresser lying around that you no longer use or even an old milk crate? Both of these would work well for a cat house. Simply cover the inside of them with either felt or flannel that you glue into place. You can then place a small cat bed inside, and drape a piece of flannel over the front of it so that your cat will have some privacy. Now your cat will have a place of his own in which to sleep or scratch.

Cat Beds

Another really easy thing to make is a cat bed. If you have an old suitcase top, making a cat bed is as simple as putting a pillow inside of it. Of course, an old wicker basket would work just as well. In order to make your cat really comfortable, simply add an old piece of memory foam to the bottom.

Cat Condos

Cats really do like to lounge around up high, especially whenever they can snuggle and hide at the same time. This is precisely what a cat condo will allow your cat to do. Unfortunately, most of them cost over $100. However, it is possible to make a customized, homemade cat condo out of scrap plywood, carpeting, and heavy-duty cardboard tubes or PVC piping.

Cat Perches or Cat Trees

There are several ways in which you can make a cat tree for your pet. Since cats naturally love to climb and play in trees, this is one approach. Another option is to use an old stepladder that is covered in carpet. These are great ways in which to satisfy your cat’s needs to get up high.

Cat Litter Box Covers

Are you tired of looking at your cat’s litter box? After all, this is an unpleasant necessity for your house cat, and, yet, most houses don’t have any good places for hiding them. Fortunately, there are a few different ways in which to cover this. You could use a stool or bench with a skirt on it to keep your litter box tucked away but still easily accessible for your cat. Another option is to pick up an old kitchen cabinet the next time you see one out curbside for trash pickup. Once you drag it home, simply cover it in the same way that you would a cathouse.

Macrame Cat Furniture

Now you know how to make some really common, yet unique cat furniture. However, there’s one additional option that you probably haven’t thought about, which is macramé. There are a lot of different types of materials that you can use here (cord does work best though). One thing that you may choose to do here is macramé something to use on your table and leg chairs that will not only protect them but also give your cat something to scratch. You will find different types of knots tat you can use here, but it is a good idea to start with the basic square knot before moving onto something more complicated.
