How to install Joomla through your cpanel

Installing Joomla through your cpanel admin area is pretty easy and takes much less time than using your ftp account. If you find it hard to install Joomla through ftp, you can try installing Joomla through your cpanel with these few easy steps.

What you need:

1. You need to have a hosting account that is running cpanel, MySQL and Apache

2. The latest version of Joomla, which is Joomla 1.7. (You can use whatever version you wish to use but for security reasons it’s advised to use the latest version.)

1. Getting started:

The first thing that you want to do is create a database for your Joomla site. Log into your cpanel account, scroll down to your MySQL database and click. Once you are in your MySQL database area, create your new database name.

In the new Database area, insert a unique name and click the create new database button. Your cPanel account will include not only your cpanel username but the name of your database name as well, for example: myaccount_joomla141. Make sure that once you create your database, that you write down your database name for future reference.

Once you are back in your MySQL panel, scroll down to the new user area. Create a new user for your newly created database. Once your new user has been created, you will want to scroll to your “add user to database area” Choose your database and assign the user you created to that database.

Once you’ve added your user to your database, you will directed to the MySQL account maintenance. Assign all of the privileges to your user and click make changes. All permissions chosen will allow the database user to be able to edit, add and work with all types of data inside your database.

2. Uploading your Joomla zip file through your cpanel

Once you are out of your MySQL area, scroll down to your file manager icon and click to open.

Click the option “web root” and press on the go button to go to your man file manager area.

You will notice an icon in the top row of icons named “upload” Click this icon to go to your upload page.

Press on your browse button to navigate through your computer files to find the location of your Joomla zip file.

Your upload will start immediately. Once it’s done you can close out the window and return to your file manager area.

3. You will now extract your files into the root area or sub root of your site.

Click on your Joomla zip file and press the extract icon at the top of your file manager

Press the “extract file(s) button to un compress your Joomla files in the place where you would like them to be.

4.Navigate to your Joomla Installer:


Open a new tab in your web browser, navigate to your address bar and ,type in your domain name. You should automatically be taken to the installation page. If you are re directed to the installation page, then type in www.YOURDOMAIN.com/installation. You will see a page which asks you to choose your language, click the language of your choice. – Once you have chosen your language, you will see your database information page. You will be asked to choose your database type, most of the time you’ll choose MySQL.Your hostname will most likely be: localhost

Your username will be the username your created for your database in the previous steps. On shared server accounts, you will normally use the hosting account name which is followed by the username you entered. Ex: mydatabase_username

When you are ready to enter your database name, enter the name of the database that you created. On shared server hosting accounts, i t is usually the hosting account name, followed by the database name you entered, for example: hostname_databasename

-For your password, you must enter the password you chose for your database/username

The “FTP Configuration” page, you will leave this blank. You can enable FTP later within the global configuration once you have completely installed Joomla. Click the “Next” button at the top right corner of the page. You will navigate to the “Main Configuration” page, on this page you will need to insert important information.For your site name, enter your website name.

Enter your chosen email address and make sure that you choose a hard password.

If you are new to Joomla, installing the sample content might be the best option to choose.You can click the “Install Sample Data” button, to have Joomla content installed on your site. This creates sample navigation and content structure, which ,makes Joomla easier to learn.

Since we are installing a new Joomla installation, the migration script is null and void. You can skip this option.

If you’ve installed Joomla correctly, you will see a message “Congratulations you have installed Joomla.”

5. Deleting your installation folder

Due to security reasons, you will not be able to move on until you have deleted the installation folder.Return back to your Cpanel and click on the “File Manager” icon and then choose “Web Root” on the following screen, and click “Go” Click one time on the installation folder and then click the “Delete” icon at the top of the page. Click on “Delete File(s)” button to delete the installation folder.

Navigate To Your Joomla Administrator

You have successfully installed Joomla through your cpanel area! To access your new administrator area, you must do the following:

In your web browsers address bar type in: www.YOURDOMAIN.com/administrator Your username by default: admin,enter your password and click the “Login.”

Take the time to Change Your Administrator Username

Before you begin to navigate through Joomla, you may want to change your administrator username and password for security purposes.

In the top menu bar of Joomla , navigate to Site > User Manager Click on the “Administrator” link Change your username and password as you wish and press save.

You have officially installed Joomla through your cpanel area!
