How to Fatten Up Your Skinny Pooch

About a year ago I was in an animal shelter looking for my families very first dog. We came across this beautiful Red Bone Coon Hound named Red. She was used as a breeding dog in her former home and was terribly malnourished. She weighed only 25 pounds when we got her and you could see every one of her ribs and discs on her back. Other then not having much to eat, she was healthy and full of energy. Upon bringing her home, we had to inquire on how to fatten her up. The following article has recipes for things know as ‘Fat Balls’ or ‘Satin Balls’ that are sure to fatten up your pooch if done right, as well as a few tips and treats to get your dog to eat more.

First of all, wet dog food holds more fat then dry dog food so if your hound needs to put on only a few more pounds, a few cans of big, thick dog food with gravy and chunks of meat will do just fine. But, if your family pet needs a little more then just a few winter pounds, here are some recipes for Fat Balls which are healthy for your animal and full of what their bodies need.

Recipe #1- Fat Balls.

1 lb. of hamburger mince with a high fat content
1 package cream cheese
1 jar of all natural peanut butter (smooth)
1 dozen egg yolks
1 cup of rolled oats soaked in milk
1 jar wheat germ

Mix thoroughly with hands or preferably a wooden spoon
Freeze into meal sized bags and thaw as needed.

Now although this recipe is not exactly money-saving, this is a wonderful mixture of high fat foods that are healthy and safe for your dog to eat.

Recipe #2- Healthy Weight Gain Mix

1 pint of whole fat Cottage Cheese
1 lb of turkey or any other ground meat, such as raw hamburger
2-3 eggs that are boiled in the shell for 30 seconds at high heat. (This will denture the whites but leave the yolk intact.)
2 tablespoons Flax Seed or Olive Oil
1 can of sardines or tuna fish

Place in food bowl after mixed and stirred thoroughly.

This recipe is full of fatty acids needed for your animal, digestive assistants and protein your dog will love.

Recipe #3- Doggie Peanut Cheese Balls

1 dozen hard boiled eggs, chopped.
1 lb jar of crunchy peanut butter
1 container of Quaker Oats Oatmeal
1 cups of evaporated milk, non-diluted
1 jar wheat germ
1 lb of hamburger
8 oz of packaged cream cheese
1 envelope of Knox Gelatin Joint Complex, unflavored.

In a bowl, pour the milk over the oatmeal and put aside to wait for the oats to absorb the milk. In another larger bowl, place all of the other ingredients and mix together. A wooden spoon or your hand work the best. Add the oatmeal and milk mixture and stir again. When blended, form into meatball sized treats and layer in a plastic freezer container. Freeze until you need them and then remove a few at a time, allow to thaw and feed as a fattening snack or a reward for something well-done!

Now although these require you to have some money in the bank, they are almost all household foods that the common family buys every month. These are wonderful treats your dog will love and are treats that I have tried and mixed with dry food as well. I highly recommend the Peanut Cheese Balls for your pet because mine loved the taste a lot better, but they all worked great. Now Red, our beautiful hound, is even more energetic and the right weight for her size dog. We couldn’t be prouder of her recovery and you will be proud of your pet too!
