Hayley Williams and Paramore Spawn New Generation of Female-Fronted Bands

Hayley Williams of Paramore spawned a new generation of female alternative rock singers. Williams, who rose to stardom fronting the band Paramore, resisted the offer to become the next big pop singer. Instead, she went for her dream of writing and recording rock music. Paramore soon became one of the biggest bands in the world.

The Next Generation:

Although Williams is still fairly young, with Paramore forming in 2004 when the singer was only 15, the vibrant and exciting lead singer shows years of success on her resume. This success and formula, featuring an energetic lead singer, opened the doors for many up and coming pop/punk/rock bands.

Here are the Top 5 Female Fronted Bands You Need to Know About:

New Years Day:

Ashley Costello leads this up and coming band. I first saw New Years Day live at Vans Warped 2011. They sound just as good live as they do on CD and Costello knows how to work the crowd. They will be a big deal soon. Read my interview with Costello here: New Years Day

Evolove:

Lucy Levinsohn is the energetic front woman of this pop/punk band. Evolove’s EP, “Breaking Heartstrings,” is a compilation of five terrific songs. Each one could be a hit for the band. Read my interview with Evolove here: Evolove

Blameshift:

Blameshift is another group that could make some noise in the industry. Jenny Mann brings pop sensibilities to the group’s catalog of rock music. Together, this is a combination that makes sense. Read my interview with Mann here: Blameshift

Crooked Cars/Evolett:

Although Evolett disbanded, the lead singer and all around cool chick, Haden Brightwell, didn’t let that bring her down. Instead, Brightwell recruited Evolett alumnus Russ Daly to form Crooked Cars, an acoustic project that showcases Brightwell’s colorful voice and tattoos. Crooked Cars is currently recording new music but from what I’ve heard already, they will find themselves in the middle of all things great. Read my interview with Brightwell here: Evolett

Scarlet Haze:

Kat Perkins brings a little attitude to pop/rock music. The band has toured with Sick Puppies, Adelita’s Way and Taddy Porter. With a powerful voice that complements great lyrics and catchy rock riffs, Scarlet Haze will be a player in the industry for many years. Read my interview with Perkins here: Scarlet Haze

Honorable Mentions:

Halestorm:

I purposely excluded Lzzy Hale of Halestorm. Hale and company have reached moderate success as a headliner and have solidified themselves as a great rock band. I hardly believe Halestorm is next generation even though they are fairly new to the game. Lzzy Hale has one of the best voices in rock and was originally featured in my column regarding Top Bands You Should Probably Know.

The Pretty Reckless:

Like Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless (TPR) was excluded due to lead singer Taylor Momsen. Momsen brings with her popularity, coming from the hit show, “Gossip Girl,” among other blockbusters. TPR is also new to the game but Momsen’s fame instantly catapulted the band into stardom. Read my interview with Momsen here: The Pretty Reckless

The Dollyrots:

I also left out The Dollyrots because they’ve had decent success in music. Led by Kelly Ogden, The Dollyrots bring a fun sound to popular music. Their version of “Bad Reputation” was included on the “Easy A” soundtrack starring Emma Stone. Read my interview with Ogden here: The Dollyrots
