Repurpose an old picture frame and turn it into a usable chalkboard tray. I am always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to recycle used objects. My weekly trips to the thrift store have uncovered various items that repurpose into creative and unique items. The most recent repurpose was turning an old picture frame into a chalkboard tray.
Chalkboard paint is available at hobby and craft stores along with many home improvement centers. Making a tray with chalkboard paint requires the use of a primer. The top of the tray is glass. Chalkboard paint does not adhere to glass well so a primer is required.
Things You’ll Need:
Old wooden picture frame with glass
Sandpaper
Lint free cloth or tack cloth
Newspaper
Paint or stain
Acrylic primer for glass
Chalkboard paint
Paintbrush
Water
Chalk
Instructions:
Step 1 – Remove the glass from the old frame. Sand the wood frame to remove the varnish. Wipe the frame to remove the sanding dust.
Step 3 – Cover a flat work surface with newspaper. Place the frame in the center of the newspaper.
Step 4 – Stain or paint the frame the desired color. Set the frame aside to dry. Allow the stain or paint to dry completely before assembling the new chalkboard tray.
Step 4 – Wash and dry the glass insert for the picture frame. Dry the glass with a lint free towel.
Step 5 – Paint the glass surface with an acrylic primer made specifically for glass. Allow the primer to dry completely before continuing.
Step 6 – Paint the primed surface with a light coat of chalkboard paint. Allow the paint to dry completely. Repeat the process twice.
Step 7 – Lay a piece of chalk on its’ side. Rub the chalk over the entire surface of the chalkboard painted glass. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth. This helps to prime the surface for writing.
Step 8 – Insert the glass into the frame so the chalkboard paint is facing to the front. Secure the glass into the frame.
Write on the surface of the tray before serving. This provides guests with an individualized message. What a conversation piece! Think outside of the box and try painting the inside of a metal tray with chalkboard paint.
