Full Sun Evergreen Flowering Native Plants that Prefer Dry Soil

Having a full sun location with the wrong plants can be a death sentence. Flowers will wither and die and leaves can scorch. Finding the right plant for that location can help keep your garden blooming fine. These flowering native plants are both evergreen, meaning they won’t lose their leaves, and are fine for full sun conditions. Plantain-leaf Pussytoes (Antennaria plantaginifolia)

Also known as Everlasting, Woman’s tobacco, or Mouse ear, this native plant is a member of the Aster family. There are basal leaves and a fuzzy clusters of flowers. Stems are erect. Leaves are silver-green. Flowers on male plants are white while female plants have white with a pink hue. Plantain-leaf pussytoes prefers to grow in full sun or partial shade and in dry acidic soil. Propagate by seeds or root division.

Spider Milkweed (Asclepias asperula)

Also known as Antelope horns, Spider antelope horns, or Green-flowered milkweed, this native is a member of the milkweed family of plants. It grows one to two feet high in a clump form. Stems are hairy and leaves are narrow and evergreen. Flowers are green-yellow with a bit of maroon, hanging in clusters. Seed pods are green and curved, looking like horns on an antelope. Spider milkweed prefers to grow in full sun with a rocky or sandy soil. Propagate by seed or by root cuttings. Seed will need quick sowing or will need three months of stratification if planting in spring.

Lanceleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata)

Also known as Coreopsis crassifolia, Lanceleaf tickseed, or Sand coreopsis, this native is a member of the Aster family. It grows one to two-and-a-half feet high with opposite green leaves and yellow flowers. Blooms are ray flowers with a yellow disk. Lanceleaf coreopsis can grow in any lighting with a dry sandy soil. It is easy to grow. Propagate by seed or clump division. It may self-seed.

Thrift Seapink (Armeria maritima)

This native is a member of the leadwort family of plants. It grows up to a foot tall with gray-green leaves and pink or lavender flowers. It has narrow leaves in a basal cluster and a globe of flowers. Stalks are slender and leafless. Thrift seapink prefers to grow in full sun with a well-drained soil. It can be propagated by seed or by cuttings. Seed will not need pretreatment prior to sowing.
