Fuel Filter Maintenance

Fuel filters have become a subject of debate. Some manufacturers use a fuel system that is called returnless. This type of fuel system uses a non-serviceable “filter” screen in the fuel tank. This type of system is becoming more and more popular with manufactures. All none returnless vehicles have a serviceable fuel filter. The location of theses fuel filters varies as much as manufacturers, makes, models and years. Consult the vehicles repair manual for location.

Fuel filters should be changed when scheduled by the manufacturers’ maintenance recommendations. Most manufacturers suggest a fuel filter change every thirty thousand miles. I have a little formula I use based on gallons purchased. Say, you get 23 MPG and you drive fifteen thousand miles a year. Fifteen thousand divided by twenty three equals six hundred and fifty three gallons of fuel. Now multiply the six hundred gallons a year by two years. This would mean your fuel filter has filtered thirteen hundred and six gallons of fuel in two years. That a lot of fuel! Some of that fuel could have contamination like water. I suggest changing your fuel filter based on gallons purchased. WOW, six hundred and fifty three gallons of fuel at $3.50 is $2,285.50 in fuel cost. Fuel filters usual cost anywhere from ten dollars to fifty dollars. Labor to install varies from market to market. The labor time is usually half an hour. The benefits of changing your fuel filter far outweigh the consequences. Fuel system components are expensive!

The basics for changing a fuel filter are as follows: Always release fuel pressure following manufactures procedure for doing this. Also release fuel vapor pressure by removing the fuel cap. Next locate the fuel filter and follow manufacturer’s procedure for removing lines and filter from their mounting. Have a fuel safe container under the fuel filter. When you release the fuel lines there could be some residual fuel pressure. Make sure the keys to the vehicle are in your pocket! You do not want anyone turning the keys while performing any of these functions.

Do to the high risk of fire, injury and property damage it is recommended that a professionally trained technician replace your fuel filter. Always follow manufacturers recommended procedures for changing a fuel filter. This is my recommendation to everyone. Typically the cost of a fuel filter replacement is right around eighty to hundred dollars.
