Five Ways for Men to Improve Sperm Count

Couples who have been trying to conceive a child often find themselves doing their best to boost their chances of conception, especially if they have been trying without success. Most fertility treatments, both homeopathic and pharmaceutical, focus on things the woman can do to boost her own fertility and improve egg quality, however, there are many things that men can do to help boost their sperm count and improve their contributions to trying to conceive. Here are some ways men can boost their sperm count, and hopefully improve their chances of conception.

Quit smoking
Believe it or not, but smoking can have a negative impact on a man’s sperm count. In fact, men who smoke have been shown to have 22% less sperm than men who do not smoke. This is a significant difference between smoking and non-smoking men. It can be difficult to quit smoking, but it’s better for a man’s health, and can increase his and his partner’s chances of conceiving.

Avoid unnecessary heat
The testicles are suspended within the scrotum outside of the body for the sole reason of protecting the sperm. Sperm are sensitive to heat and must be at a temperature slightly lower than the body temperature, thus explaining why the testicles are located outside of the body. If a man is concerned with his sperm count, he should do his best to allow good air circulation to the scrotum in order to prevent overheating of the testicles. Avoiding tight fitting clothing and avoiding heat sources, such as a laptop on the lap, saunas and hot tubs, can help improve sperm count.

Get in shape
When trying to conceive, it is a good idea to get to a healthy weight. A man doesn’t need to be in the shape of a body builder, however, if a man is obese, he is likely to suffer from hormonal issues which could have a negative impact on sperm production. If weight is a concern, a man should discuss weight goals, as well as ways to lose weight, with his physician while trying to conceive.

Relax
It can be stressful trying to conceive and experiencing no success. It may not feel possible to relax, but avoiding stress is important to promote optimal sperm health. A man who has difficulty relaxing should practice relaxation exercises and find relaxation methods that work for him specifically. Avoiding stress may improve sperm count.

Take supplements
Taking supplements that are specially designed to help improve male fertility may be helpful in promoting a healthy sperm count. These supplements often contain vitamins and minerals, such as zinc, selenium, vitamin C and vitamin E, which are all believed to play a very important role in healthy sperm production.
