Embarrassing Plays for Denver Bronco Greats John Lynch and the Denver Defense

Great football players are still fallible men. Unfortunately for Denver Bronco’s fans, this truth holds steady for their heroes. While most Broncos fans know all about a particularly unsavory moment from Jake Plummer, you have to dig a little to find an embarrassing play by Bronco greats, John Lynch and the Denver Defense.

On October 3, 2004 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, rookie Michael Clayton of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat out corner back Champ Bailey to get open. He then made a great dive to catch an over thrown ball. When Clayton landed his helmet flew off but he still hadn’t been touched by any of the Bronco’s defense. According to the St. Petersburg Times, Denver Bronco safety John Lynch could have tackled or even just touched him while he was down but instead ran right by the rookie. Clayton got up and ran twenty yards, without a helmet, for a touchdown. The Denver Broncos played the Indianapolis Colts on January 9, 2005 in the AFC Wild Card Game at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The 41-10 loss to the Colts was full of moments that lead to tight end Shannon Sharpe’s statement as quoted in the Colorado Spring’s Gazette,”… I don’t know that I’ve ever, ever, in 14 years of playing, felt the way I felt today…” The play that summed up the game for the Broncos was when a group of the Denver defense stood around and argued when Colts receiver Marvin Harrison caught a pass and fell untouched near the Denver 30-yard line. While the argument was being held, Harrison got up and ran into the end zone for a touchdown.
