Recycle a used canning jar into the perfect pin cushion. This easy to make project takes just minutes to make and last forever. The canning jar pin cushion doubles as a container to hold extra straight pins, buttons, needles, clasps and other small items. Use a fabric that compliments the colors in your sewing room or select a color that is vibrant and easy to spot.
The proper canning jar to use is one that has a flat lid and a ring. The two pieces are needed to hold the homemade pin cushion. Select a small, medium or large canning jar depending on what you would like to store in the bottom or how much room you have in your sewing area.
Things You’ll Need:
10- to 12-inch scrap of cotton or cotton blend fabric
Pencil
Scissors
Canning jar lid, flat lid with ring
Canning jar
Fiberfill
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
Instructions:
Step 1 – Place the scrap of cotton or cotton blend fabric on a flat work surface. Turn the fabric over so the front of the fabric is facing down.
Step 2 – Center the flat canning jar lid in the center of the fabric. Draw a line around the lid approximately 2-inches from the edge. Cut along the drawn line.
Step 3 – Create a 4-inch ball of fiberfill. Place the ball on the top of the flat canning jar lid.
Step 4 – Center and place the fabric over the top of the fiberfill ball.
Step 5 – Place the canning jar ring over the top of the fiberfill ball and fabric. Slide the flat canning jar lid inside the ring. Pull the edges of the fabric to create a puffy top that sticks above the surface of the canning jar ring. This puff creates the pin cushion.
Step 6 – Turn the lid over so the fiberfill puff is on the bottom. Squeeze a zigzag line of hot glue over the back of the flat canning jar lid. Press the edges of the fabric into the glue to hold in place. Trim excess fabric as needed. The pin cushion is now complete.
Fill the jar portion of the pin cushion with the desired items. Add softness to the jar by filling it with lace. Give yourself a treat and fill it with your favorite candy!
