E-verify Represents a Slippery Slope for American Security

As I was driving today I had 77 WABC radio on in midtown Manhattan. WABC radio sort of mirrors the pulse of what’s going on in Manhattan even if they have a great deal of syndicated programming. This finger on the pulse mentality is particularly evident in their commercials. So it was with some interest that I heard a commercial for e-verify today on the air.

The advertisement was with these two people; a guy and a girl; talking about how they are going to get these new employees approved for hire! (because, you know, everyone is hiring) One told the other about e-verify. E-verify is a service where you can find out if you’re hiring legal workers or illegal workers.

In an age of Chris Hanson people need to be worried about every move they make. Even if you think you’re talking to someone who’s legal, if you’re not doing your due diligence then you yourself can get in trouble.

Still, it makes me interested to hear this commercial on 77 WABC radio almost 10 years after 9/11. Really? Are we still this sloppy with our borders ten years after September 11 that we don’t know who is in the country? The sad truth is that this is true; perfectly legal old-lady residents get groped when they’re on a plane from Sarasota to Lansing but we can’t devote the energy and time to our borders to make sure that those who shouldn’t be crossing borders, are not.

Moreover with the advances in technology and our reliance on these systems, it seems that if these illegal’s are smart, they would be able to hack their way into a system like e-verify and/or use an identity of a legal person. People are smart and if people want to attack us, they will.

E-verify might be a good service for the providers who are able to profit from this, but this is a branch of the Department of Homeland Security. So now we have to trust the employers hiring these shady people to do the work of government for the government? The whole thing just seems like another unnecessary thing which will only spool out and continue to make the United States less and less safe.

This is the world we live in; these are the challenges we continue to face. The government should really do their citizens a service and put safeguards in place for us. Or else what is to stop the United States from winding up with a Libya situation domestically? It may sound far-fetched but all it takes is a concerted effort from like-minded individuals and a government who can’t be bothered to stop them.
