Crocheting a Cord

Cords are used as drawstrings, handbag or purse handles or for tying items together. Crochet your own cording using any size yarn or crochet hook. The large the crochet hook, the more open the weave will appear between stitching so keep this in mind when crocheting a cord.

Three processes exist to crochet a cord. The first is to crochet a tube. Practice this process using a size H/8/5mm crochet hook and 4-ply yarn. Make a round cord by chaining 2 stitches. Single crochet four times in the second chain from the hook. Do not join. Continue to single crochet in each stitch until the cord is the desired length. Make a square cord by chaining four. Single crochet three times in the fourth chain from the hook. Do not join. Single crochet around the front of the post of the turned chain and the front of each single crochet until the cord is the desired length.

The second process is to create a base to crochet around. Again, use the size H/8/5mm crochet hook to experiment with this process. Cut four lengths of yarn approximately 6-inches longer than the desired cord length. Match the ends. Tie each end with a separate knot. A long strand of four pieces of yarn should exist. Create a slipknot and place the loop on the crochet hook. Wrap the working yarn around the long strand and make the first chain stitch. Continue to chain stitch along the length of yarn to create the remainder of the cord length. Finish off when complete.

The third way to make a cord is to crochet two separate pieces of yarn together. Cut two pieces of yarn double the length of the desired cord plus 6-inches. Fold each strand of yarn in half. Tie a slipknot at the folded end of each strand of yarn. Slide both slipknots on the crochet hook. Move the back loop over the first loop and remove it from the crochet hook. Loop the two strands of yarn over the crochet hook from the same length of yarn as the loop on the crochet hook. Pull the last loop over the first. Loop the two strands of the opposite length of yarn over the crochet hook then pull the back loop over the first – repeat this step until the length of cord is completed.
