Cord and Roping You Make from Soda Bottles

Okay, we all get it. It’s up to each and every one of us to help save our earth. Now, people have come up with many different ways to recycle paper, aluminum, plastic, and more. So, any time we go to throw something in the trash we have to consider whether or not there is a way to reuse that item, and if we can, that’s one less thing in the dump. It’s actually become a popular craze; people try to see who can come up with the most unusual way to recycle something. Those people have made newspaper fireplace logs, dryer lint campfire starters, bleach bottle piggy banks, cardboard tables, and even soda bottle cord and rope. Oh, you haven’t heard? Yeah, you can turn ordinary soda bottles into functional cord and rope which you can use in many different ways.

Many types of plastic bottles can be used to make rope and cord. Soda bottles can be the 20oz versions or even the 2 or 3-liter types. The same goes for some water and juice bottles. The best choice for a plastic bottle is one that has a middle area which is not ridged. If the area where you hold the bottle is smooth and flat, that’s a good bottle for making cord. The bottle doesn’t necessarily have to be round; it could also be a square bottle.

You only need two implements to make a lengthy piece of cord from the pop bottle. One is a sharp knife, like a craft knife. Use it to cut the bottle. Lay the chosen bottle on one side and cut off the top, and bottom. Cut them as straight as possible and cut them so that you have a cylinder which remains.

The other implement you will need is a pair of sharp scissors. After you have removed the top and bottom, begin cutting around one edge, and do this in a spiral shape, so that you continue to cut from one side of the cylinder, to the opposite side. As you do this, you’ll create a very long, super thin piece of cord.

The plastic cord can be used to tie or bind but can also be braided and used for crafting and decorating. It’s easy to store because it naturally curls into a neat little pile. Making the cord or roping is a great way to recycle plastic bottles – something most of us use quite a bit of in our daily lives.
