Christmas Crafts: How to Make a Christmas Candy Topiary

Christmas and candy go hand and hand. And if you want to add a little extra Christmas flare to the holidays, you have to try making this Christmas craft project. This craft is nicely inexpensive to make and lots of fun. Of course you can use any type of candy. You could experiment and try candies that are all the same color for a Christmas craft color theme. You could pick out candies that are all red would accent a poinsettia theme, white candies for a snow theme, or green candies for a natural accent.

For this Christmas craft you will need:

Royal Frosting Confectioner’s sugar Assorted Candies (Peppermint disks, little red cinnamon candies, and small colored candies work great) 2 Small Styrofoam tree shaped cones Plastic wrap Christmas Coffee Mug 1 Large Candy Cane Craft glue Small Bowl Water Green Food Coloring Shredded Coconut Tin Foil Cookie Sheet

First, you want to mix up a batch of really stiff royal frosting. Royal frosting is extra thick frosting that dries to a harden consistency. Next, you remove the paper wrappers from the candies. Now starting at the top so you do not get your fingers all gooey, you spread large amounts of frosting about 1 and a half to 2 inches thick.

And now for the creative side, you then arrange the candies down and around the cone. When you are all finished, wrap the cone in plastic wrap and allow this Christmas craft to completely dry. I would say to wait at least 24 hours.

Next, you cut off the top of the second cone and place the cone into the bottom of the mug. You have to really wedge in the Styrofoam into the mug, and you can even use royal frosting to make sure the foam sits in the mug securely.

Now, you cut off the curved portion of the candy cane and push the cane gently into the bottom of the decorated cone at the center. Next, you remove and push the cane into the center of the Styrofoam in the mug. And then you remove and stuff craft glue into the hole in the Styrofoam and place the cane back into the Styrofoam.

Now, you wait until the glue is all dry. And in a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup of water and several drops of green food coloring, 1/2 cup coconut and stir to distribute the color evenly. Now you simply spread the coconut mixture on a foil lined cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees for 20 minutes until the coconut is dry. Next, you remove from cookie sheet from the oven and fill the mug with the colored coconut.
