Chasing Dolphins

Dolphins travel in three’s, much like super heroes. This morning there were at least twenty of them frolicking along close to the shoreline following me on my morning walk? They tend to provide instant entertainment. Dolphins love to ham it up, leaping out of the water taking their tail and splashing you. It is almost like they just want to let you know they are there. They are very social animals.

Welcome to the Calibogue Sound. You may find sand dollars in the low tide every few feet along the shoreline. The tide also leaves the pre-historic looking horseshoe crab dead on the beach. They are like a big buffet for the sea gulls, sand pipers and probably many other animals. If you force yourself to walk an hour out on the beach then you have to walk back another hour. It is a great way to get a two hour long walk in and clear your mind. Sometimes you can pray and meditate, sometimes you can just do some very creative thinking, but the longer you walk the better things get.

I have been blessed with 30 days to chase dolphins. You may call it a mid life crisis, I am just going to refer to it as rehab. I am here to write, to paint to exercise and to explore all things creative. Daufuskie Island is an island that is one nautical mile off of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. There is no bridge to the island you must use a boat or take the 45 minute ferry from Hilton Head. There are three golf courses all designed by professionals and a world renowned golf school for future PGA players. There are many artist and writers that live here on the island, but even the less artistic residents are all very resilient folks. You really have to be to exist here. You should know how to live without electricity if you need to, fix a broken down golf cart and just not sweat the small stuff.

This is a funny little eclectic island that is so much stranger in real life then fiction could ever be. You have movie stars and rock stars here trying to shelter themselves from the masses and seek out solitude. I am not a rock star but I am also out here seeking solitude. And so my 30 days of chasing dolphins begins.
