Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: Activities and Attractions

Mention the word Mexico, and immediately the ancient civilizations of the Maya and Aztecs come to mind. Yet across the nation, there is another kind of Mexico, a less popular and less crowded portion that runs along the Pacific Ocean. The Baja California peninsula, clearly visible on any map due to its characteristic finger-like form stretching into the sea, offers a great starting point for exploring the west side of Mexico. The coastline of this area boasts a variety of cliffs plunging into the cobalt blue sea surrounded by golden sand and bizarrely shaped rocks carved by Mother Nature.

Cabo San Lucas, a meeting point between the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, is a wonderful place to visit. In ancient times this location was the official port of the Spanish conquerors and was used as a routine stop for the ancient galleons coming from the Philippines.

Cabo San Lucas is a location undergoing constant growth, its tourism continuously brings economic resources and its center is under expansion with luxury hotels and golf courses, scattered along the coast that leads to San Jose. The reason for this great touristic expansion is easy to understand: just look around and contemplate the beautiful coast boasting desert rocks with shapes and colors interwoven with the tonalities of the sea.

One of the most visited places in the area of Los Cabos is “El Arco”, a gigantic natural arch rising from the beach to the sea. El Arco is a spectacular place, ideal for memorable photographs taken at sunrise and sunset. Near El Arco is the “Playa del Amor”, also known as the “Lover’s Beach” which can be reached by sea, or via the direct path from the city center.

Other beaches in the south of Cabo San Lucas have been “colonized” by beautiful complexes, which have certainly taken away some of the area’s original local beauty, but offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy exceptional scenarios with all the comforts. Worth mentioning are the Solmar Resort, the nearest tourist facility in El Arco, and the Terrasol resort. From these locations excursions to the sea are organized with the goal of capturing marlin, a type of swordfish. This is a tourist attraction for fishing aficionados since this fish is very challenging to capture.

“Los Cabos Summer Dive Fiesta” is held in the month of August, offering the opportunity to engage in spectacular nighttime scuba diving or the option of enjoying parties on the beach accompanied by food and endless carnival parades. If you also love shopping, Cabo San Lucas offers many opportunities, but if you are specifically looking for crafts, woodwork and paintings, one of the best places to visit is “Sol Dorado”, in the “Plaza del Sol” and the “Plaza del Mar”. Here you will also find boutiques and everything you will need on the beach, such as sandals and sunglasses, but also small bars and restaurants that are delicious and very affordable.

The interior portion of the city, between the avenues Ni±os Heroes and 20 de Noviembre, offers a quiet place to relax and take a stroll and also houses a museum of anthropology. Worth visiting is the characteristic “Iglesia de San Lucas” built in 1730. When you finally feel hungry after all the walking, the restaurant La Dolce is a great place to stop for lunch and dinner. Here there is excellent food with a great variety of appetizers and salads, and a nice list of wine.

At Cabo San Lucas all kinds of water sports are offered, such as deep sea fishing, water skiing, scuba diving and snorkeling, paragliding and bungee jumping.

The climate here is pleasant all year round, with peaks of torrid heat in the summer, but always tempered by the proximity to the ocean. The winter season is definitely worth visiting for the migration of whales. Baja California is one of the best locations in the world for whale watching. Large whales can be observed making prodigious leaps to the delight of tourists who watch this exciting event. From Cabo San Lucas you can join organized excursions by boat, especially in the months of January through April.

Cabo San Lucas is quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations of Mexico, courtesy of its pristine white beaches and the myriad of delicious restaurants. This is the ideal destination if you want to soak up the sun in a relaxed and fascinating atmosphere, eat out in different places, and stroll among the many shops. If these are the things you are looking for in a vacation, then Cabo San Lucas will be an excellent vacation destination for long lasting memories.
