Brunch Donut and Fruit Bouquet

Having a bridesmaids’ brunch? A baby shower in the late morning? A girl’s night with your friends? No matter what the special occasion, you’ll love offering your guests sweets and fruits, in the form of a flower bouquet. There are a lot of different “flowers” you can make to please the crowd and, when they’re all made into a lovely bouquet, you end up with a table centerpiece as well.

To make the most convincing bouquet it’s important to have greenery. Whether you’re using real leaves, or silk ones, make sure they’re clean, and place them in a chosen vase. The greenery will only serve to accent the bouquet so don’t get too carried away with it. Just a few sprigs will be fine.

Mini donuts and donut holes are perfect for creating scrumptious flowers. Begin with green skewers – found at craft stores and places that sell cooking supplies – and make the flowers on them. Push a skewer through a simple donut hole and you have a cute, although simplistic, flower bulb. To make it a bit fancier you can first put a circle of leaves on the skewer, then slide the donut hole onto the stick, above the leaves.

Combine donuts and fruit by starting with miniature donuts. The best ones are those with holes in the centers. Position a fruit or fruit piece in the middle of one of the donuts. Slide the skewer through the side of the donut, through the fruit, and through the opposite side. Stop short of pushing the stick all the way through.

Some fruits you can put in the middle of the donuts include cherries, strawberries, grapes, pineapple pieces, melon pieces, and blueberries. Besides fruits you can also skewer candy bar pieces, marshmallows, soft cookie pieces, and even jellybeans. Some foods, like marshmallows, can even be flowers, rather than just the centers of flowers. Additional flowers can be made from tiny cupcakes or mini muffins. Each combination of fruits and sweets renders a different flower. Make all the flowers look alike or create a bouquet featuring many different, edible flowers.

There are lots of ways to make each flower look unique. Draw on them with tube frosting, arrange candy sprinkles to resemble seeds, drizzle chocolate over some, or frost some of the donuts. When they’re all in the vase you’ll be ready for company. When I made this bouquet, my guests were stunned at how beautiful it was, and they all complimented me on the fruits and sweets. Yours will, too.
