Best Foods for Grilling: Beyond Meat & Fish

When you think of grilling, images of hot dogs and hamburgers, sizzling steaks and whole fish often spring to mind, alongside an assortment of vegetables that also go great on the grill, such as zucchini, peppers and asparagus. But there are lots of other great foods for grilling that can add new elements of flavor to any meal.

Corn on the cob is one such item that is one of the best foods for grilling. There are numerous ways to do this. One of the most common is to strip the husk, spread some butter over the corn and season with salt and pepper, and then wrap the corn in tin foil. Grill it over a medium flame, turning it about every 5 minutes. It’s simple, and very tasty, and you can experiment with different seasonings such as smoked salt, or herbed butter. You can also grill corn on the cob while it is still in the husk, turning it as each side becomes slightly browned and charred.

Pineapple slices are another great item that can be placed on the grill. Take thick slices of pineapple and try different seasonings, such as cinnamon-sugar, curry powder, butter, or soy sauce. They grill up quick, needing only a few minutes on each side over a high flame.

Sweet Vidalia onions are another item you can grill with a number of different seasoning combinations. Use thick slices and spear them lengthwise with a metal skewer so they don’t fall apart while grilling. Spread some butter over the top, and season with parmesan cheese and some salt, or curry powder and cinnamon, and even some herbs like thyme and oregano. The possibilities for different seasonings are seemingly endless. Teriyaki sauce also works well. These go great with steaks.

There are of course many other food items that go great on the grill, but these are some of the best foods for grilling that, with the right seasoning combinations, can go great with a wide variety of meals.
