Pulling the plug on their television-sprung romance, Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez have confirmed that their engagement is off.
A rep for the former “Bachelorette” couple told People, “Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez have ended their relationship. As they go through this difficult time, we ask that you respect the couple’s privacy.”
The pair, who met on season six of the popular ABC show and became engaged after a whirlwind nine-week romance, worked to dispel rumors that their relationship was on the decline as recently as last month. “We didn’t meet in the most traditional way. We had a very short courtship and we only knew each other nine weeks before we got engaged. We are still figuring out our lives as individuals,” Ali told press.
Still the 27-year-old was quick to reassure readers, “We’re still engaged, we’re still living together,” adding, “We just don’t feel the need to walk down the aisle right now.”
Earlier this month the former “Bachelorette” star could be heard singing a similar tune while at the OpenSky pop-up gallery launch event in New York City. Speaking to OK!, Fedotowsky acknowledged that her and Roberto’s engagement had been a long one, but blamed the show, calling it “a little out of whack.”
“Everything is done backwards. Moving together right away and all that stuff,” said Ali.
She went on to highlight the positive aspects of not rushing down the aisle, as she told the mag, “The good thing about a long engagement is that at that point you’ve already committed your life to each other, so there’s no game playing. Whereas when you’re dating instead of engaged, sometimes little games can be played, like ‘Should I text him? Should I bring up kids? But we’re only dating – he’s only my boyfriend – I don’t know if he wants to spend his life with me.’”
Ali and Roberto are certainly not the first pair to part ways after meeting on ABC’s popular romance show. According to the Washington Post, four of the 7 “Bachelorette” couples made have called it quits.
