The duties of a governor general is to represent the ruling British Monarch in Canada. The governor general carries out administrative duties and also celebratory or festive activities. We will now look at the three female governor generals of Canada, two of which were from Montreal.

Adrienne Clarkson returns to television

After her resignation from McClelland_and_Stewart, once a division of Random House, Adrienne returned to television where she hosted the Adrienne Clarkson Summer Festival in 1988. The show did well in terms of recognition in the arts, but never had very high ratings.

Officer of the Order of Canada

Adrienne continued with the show for four years. Despite the low ratings, for her show, Adrienne Clarkson was appointed officer of the Order of Canada for her long outstanding journalism and media career. Adrienne hosted over 3,500 television shows and assisted several charities such as; Horizons of Canada, an international writing association with a cultural and political bend, called International Pen, and The Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Other nominations and awards

In 1993, Adrienne Clarkson received several Gemini Awards during this period of time. Clarkson won the best host award for light information, variety, or performing arts program or series, for her show Adrienne Clarkson Presents.

In 1995 she won the Donald Brittain Award, for the best social/political documentary program. She also won the french version of the Gemini Awards Gémeaux Award for Adrienne Clarkson Presents.

Subject of satire

Adrienne Clarkson had a strong and sometimes haughty character, this made her the subject of several satires. The most famous satire was done on the CBC radio show Double Exposure, a show that poked fun at Canadian politics. Linda Cullen, co-creator of the show’s immortal line was, “I’m Adrienne Clarkson, and you’re not.” (borrowed from Chevy Chase on Saturday Night Live ).
