About “The Shoe Fetish Slayer”

Jerry Brudos is a serial killer that is also known as the “Lust Killer” and the “Shoe Fetish Slayer” (Montaldo). This rapist, torturer and necrophiliac stalked women in the Portland, Oregon area from 1968 to 1969 (Montaldo). Jerry had been a strange kid when he was growing up. At the young of age of five he had acquired a distinguishing love for women’s shoes. As he became older this love for women’s shoes turned into more of a fetish and he would break into people homes to steal women’s shoes and panties (Montaldo). Not to mention the fact that he would even choke girls or knock them unconscious so he would be able to steal their shoes (Montaldo). Matter of fact when he was 17 he had to go to a mental ward due to some disturbing behavior he had engaged in with a female. However, he only stayed there for nine months and they were able to determine that the cause of his behavior was due to the hate that he felt for his mother (Montaldo).

For a while it seemed that Jerry had outgrown behavior. He was able to successfully complete school and land an okay job. Not to mention the fact that he had an amazing wife and even children. But, this not last long after they moved to Oregon he found out that his wife was not really into his strange sexual requests even though she went along with them. Also, his wife became surprised when she kept running across pictures of nude women and molded breasts around the house (Montaldo).

In the years 1968 and 1969 Jerry got back into his old habits – women started to disappear from his local area. All the women he kidnapped and killed were between the ages of 19 and 23. He would either cut off their feet, hang them from the ceiling, choke them and then dispose of their bodies in the lake when he had moved on to the next victim. However, some of the women managed to get away and were able to help the police locate him. The police found all of the proof that they needed when they searched his home and he even confessed to four of the murders. Jerry was sentenced to the death penalty but by the age 67 he died in his cell of what was said to be natural causes.

The doctors who diagnosed Jerry at an earlier age would say that this behavior resulted from him hating his mother. However, theorists who use the differential association theory would say that the community and the environment that Jerry grew up in was what lead him to commit such crime. Then, on the other hand, theorists who use the social control theory would conclude that Jerry committed the crimes due to the fact that he did not feel as though it was wrong and he obviously was not punished for his behavior when he was younger. So, he felt it was okay to continue acting out this way when he became an adult.
