5 Ways to Set and Achieve Personal Goals

If you think you deserve more out of life, you must broaden your scope. The most effective way to do that is to set some solid personal goals – and then get started achieving them. Here are five basic steps that you can take to ascertain and set the goals that will determine your fate and fulfill your ultimate purpose.

1. Brainstorm.

Ask yourself the following question: What would I do with my life if I couldn’t fail? Just asking yourself this will put you in the proper mindset to really focus on compelling goals.

2. Write everything down.

Grab a pen and a piece of paper. Scribble out your thoughts and ideas, as well as your answers to the above question. Do not censor your thinking. Remember, you are merely making a list of things you’d like to accomplish if you knew that there was nothing whatsoever holding you back. Write for a minimum of five minutes straight. If you feel stuck, ask yourself some additional questions. What skills would you like to master? What character traits do you want to develop?

3. Set a timeline for each of your goals.

After you’ve handwritten all the things you want to achieve in life, go back and study them again. This time, however, establish a deadline for each goal. Whether or not you think you can accomplish these goals doesn’t matter. Just determine how quickly you would like to achieve each goal. Be realistic, yet challenge yourself. Set your goal timelines in 1-, 2-, 3-, 5- or 10-year increments.

4. Prioritize your 1-year goals.

Go back and consider all the goals you’d like to achieve by next year. Find the 1-year goal that excites you the most – the one that would give you the greatest amount of happiness f you achieved it. This is now your top priority goal!

5. Dedicate yourself to your top priority goal.

Take a moment to write down the reasons why you are committed to making this goal a reality. These self-motivating statements will help you embark on achieving the goal right away. You will realize how dedicated you truly are and this will make you even more committed to achieving the goal.
