5 Reasons Why the English Major is Not Terrible

Being an English major, It seems as though there is no opportunities for growth or employment. I mean, English majors get a lot of flak for choosing to major in something which they love. Take for instance, the fact that those who major in English read classics as well as contemporary novels which many of their classmates have not even heard of. Most of them enjoy reading stories for all their classes. However, most of them love to write and write with a fervor. Some know that there is no job after college called “English Major Job”, but that would be their dream. No, most understand that they must somehow make something of themselves and “make a future for themselves”..whatever that means. So, without further a do, the ten reasons why the English major is not terrible:

1) They are willing to work. While this may sound like the obvious college student, English majors are willing to take a chance on what they love. Whether this be writing or teaching, students want to learn how to make a successful future for themselves. Admittedly, even English majors can procrastinate. However, at the same time they know that they must work know to achieve their goals after college. It also helps that, in most schools, there is usually a listening and caring group of English faculty who are ready to push their students out in the world and become someone both the faculty and student can be proud of.

2) Knowledgeable. It might be a known fact that those who major in English are poor in math and science, however most are accepting of this fact and move on. Others, however want to learn and read as much as they can about a particular topic to gain interest. Reading is required to be an English major and the vast majority read more than simply literature. From politics, fashion, cooking, art, history, health and fitness–Students who have are English majors have a good amount of interests and hobbies combined with their love of reading which leads to a great wealth of knowledge.

3) They grow in their area of expertise. The majority of those who choose to major in English become teachers or professors, but there are those who choose to pursue journalism or even public relations. While in their freshman year most college students do not know where their life will take them or what steps to take next and this does not exclude English majors. However, by their senior year half of the English majors at a university know what is in store for them in the future and have plans set; while the other half may not be entirely sure yet where the road in life may take them. The main point being, that English majors mature as time goes on, realizing the need to understand life goals. Most see themselves as adults after college and are ready to begin a new chapter in their careers’ or lives.

4) It is a neutral degree. While some may argue that the English major is a useless degree, with few choices left after graduation but to go on the streets and become a OWS protester. On another note, English majors possess many key elements some of which include: Writing skills, computer proficiency, competent research skills, ability to understand dynamics of a story (useful for those pursuing Journalism) and others. It is important to understand how these skills can be related to a career in business, public relations, or even law. English majors may keep to themselves most of the time, but they know that with the degree they have they have the chance to further their education with the skills they already have to become successful.

5) They are nice people. Some may say that English majors receive little homework as they are only writing papers. To most, writing a paper is easier than taking a test. However, no one can doubt that writing a 20 page paper takes time and effort, as well as the talent for writing well. Yet, for all they reading and writing they do, English majors sure are nice people. You may be thinking that most college students are fairly friendly and while this is true, English majors try to be patient to all. They can be very sarcastic and witty, which is important especially when one does not know what will happen after they complete college.
