People do strange things for internet fame. Some activities become viral fads, sporting web sites devoted to them. The five most popular are planking, owling, batmanning, stocking and tebowing. Here are examples of successes and failures. Warning – the “epic fail” videos may contain offensive language, personal injury, and footage of people shaming themselves for life.
Planking
Planking is laying flat, face down, often in an unusual spot. It requires the rigidity and IQ of a six food length of wood. Planking on unstable perches can result in epic fail slow-motion videos.
Owling
Perch on top of something, turn your head and give your best thousand-yard stare. Snap a picture and post it. Here’s a hint: owling on exercise balls works poorly. Your friends will still post the video no matter how embarrassing it may be.
Batmanning
If you have strong ankles and enjoy the feeling of blood rushing to your head you might like batmanning, or hanging upside-down by your feet in strange places. Unstable anchor surfaces and weak feet continue to cause embarrassing accidents.
Stocking
Mimicking an image from a stock photo site is called stocking. The practice is so silly that success and failure are the same thing. Some examples closely match the original, while others are so jarringly bad they can cause laughter.
Tebowing
Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos quarterback, has become famous for his habitual and often unusually timed lunges into a kneeling prayer position. Copying this pose, either in tribute to or in ridicule of the NFL star, is called tebowing. The football player may be praying, but the internet masses are in it for the photo op. There are classic examples of it on a dedicated web site.
