10 Free IPhone Travel Apps for the Thanksgiving Holiday

People all over the country are already getting ready to prepare for next week’s Thanksgiving holiday festivities in anticipation of family gatherings and having to fly or drive during one of the busiest times of the year for travelling. With the ever-rising popularity of smart phone apps, savvy developers have created a wide assortment of great travel apps and many of these might be worth trying during your effort to make it to your mother or grandmother’s home. The following are a list of 10 great free travel apps to use for the Thanksgiving holiday, whether you are driving or flying.

1) Trip Tracker Apps – There are some great apps to consider using if you have to book a flight, make hotel reservations or rent a car. There are some “Pro” versions of trip tracker apps such as the TravelTracker – Personal Travel Assistant and the TripTracker Pro but you might be able to get by with the free apps for your holiday travel. TripTracker is available as a free download as well as some other great apps, with TripIt being one of the most popular on the iTunes Store.

2) Airline Apps – All of the major American airlines now have apps of their own, including American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest, and Continental. You may be able to scan your boarding pass right off your iPhone from these apps and keep track of your airlines miles, if applicable.

3) Gas Buddy – If you are looking for the lowest gas prices in the area in which you are traveling, Gas Buddy not only shows you the price, gas station and address, it also gives you a map where its located!

4) Find My Car – For those who might be a little directionally challenged, the Find My Car app can literally help you locate your parked car! It might prove handy if you have to park your car in an unfamiliar area at night.

5) Trip Advisor – Many folks already use this as a measure of quality when searching for a hotel, restaurant or nightclub. But when you’re traveling, the Trip Advisor app can be handy if you are looking for things to do during the Thanksgiving holidays.

6) Inrix – This is a great travel app to consider as it might help you negotiate through areas of dense traffic or avoid them altogether. Inrix will display a map of the roads you plan to travel on and the current areas of congestion. Obviously no one wants you to use this app while you are driving so let someone else in your vehicle give you advice off this app.

7) AAA Roadside – Nobody wants to get a flat tire or have his or her car break down. But with travelling on the nation’s highways, it’s inevitable that a small percentage of people travelling by car will sustain some sort of incident. AAA Roadside could potentially save you time and effort. Of course, it is also useful to have an AAA (American Automobile Association) membership!

8) IBart and Cal Train Schedule – If you are travelling in the San Jose/San Francisco Bay area, here are a couple of great apps of two of the biggest public transportation systems in the area, BART and Cal Train. There may be a different public transportation app relevant to your area such as a New York or Los Angeles Metro map.

9) Travel Websites -If you book a hotel on one of the travel websites such as Expedia, Orbitz or even Hotels.com, all of these and more have free apps on the Apple App Store!

10) Vingo – If don’t have the iPhone 4S and you really wish you had the ground breaking personal assistant capabilities of Siri, then maybe Vingo can help ease some of the angst you might experience until the iPhone 5 comes out. It features some of the capabilities of Siri and is worth checking out, especially since it’s free!
