“X-Men: First Class” – My Favorite Movie of 2011

2011 saw a considerable number of good movies, most of them released over the summer during which time students are on vacation from school and adults may take some vacation days from work. What’s one option for people with more free time? Watching a movie in theaters of course! My favorite movie of 2011 was “X-Men: First Class.” Sure, it wasn’t the only hero movie of the year and had to compete with other hero movies such as “Thor”, “Captain America” and “Green Lantern.” Let alone it had competition with the latest installments of successful series such as “Transformers”, “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Harry Potter.” But “X-Men: First Class” stuck out in my mind the most and for a variety of reasons.

First off, a big reason that the movie grossed over $140 million dollars was because of good acting. Everyone has seen those movies that rely heavily on only actor’s and actresses’ names or star-power. The only “A-list” actor in “X-Men: First Class” was Kevin Bacon and he hadn’t been part of a big-name movie in years. The rest of the actors and actresses were up-and-coming and you could tell they put a lot of effort into this movie so that it would be a big accomplishment. The movie also didn’t rely too heavily on sex-appeal. Granted there were probably thousands of boyfriends or husbands that got punched in the arm by their girlfriends or wives when their jaws dropped at the sight of the beautiful and curvacious Jennifer Lawrence (Raven/Mystique) and January Jones (Emma Frost). However, the whole movie didn’t revolve around how ridiculously attractive they were.

“X-Men: First Class” also had a good story. It illuminated the origins of some of the X-Men characters from the other movies of the franchise for movie-goers that weren’t also huge fanboys. Comedy, action and adventure are only a few of the elements incorporated by the story and they all added up to a satisfying climax at the end, which was of course spruced up by awesome special effects. Fortunately special effects were present throughout the whole movie, from the demon-looking Azazel teleporting all over the place to Magneto lifting a whole submarine out of the ocean, and were collectively one more reason that “X-Men: First Class” was my favorite movie of 2011.
