Why is Mitt Romney Considered a Threat to Christian Values? Comparing Christianity and Mormonism

If you listen to the Christian viewpoints which abound about the 2012 elections you will hear many negatives about the front-runner, Mitt Romney. He makes no attempt at hiding his Mormon faith. Should he? I don’t believe he should back down from true Mormon faith just as I will not refrain from strong Christian beliefs and values. As a conservative Christian I do not believe in all of the tenets of the Mormon faith. As a sensible, thinking, American I can see that a committed Mormon would be much better for this country than what we have had in recent years. If you look at the moral similarities between Christianity and Mormonism you, also, will see that supporting Romney for President may not be such a bad idea.

Let’s compare the beliefs of Mormonism with those of the Free Will Baptist (Protestant) religion. The Mormon beliefs presented are based on a site titled ” Mormon Beliefs ” while the Free Will Baptist beliefs are based on personal knowledge and many years of personal commitment. “Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ” is the first principle mentioned at the referenced site. As Protestant Free Will Baptists we also believe that the only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ. That counts for similarity number one. Baptism is a strong belief of the Protestant faith, and baptism by immersion is a large part of the Free Will Baptist beliefs. The Mormon faith also believes in baptism by immersion – similarity number two. Baptism by immersion was Jesus’ method of baptism and we carry that forth in today’s services. A third similarity involves the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The beliefs of the Mormon faith regarding the Holy Ghost are basically the same as those of our Protestant brothers – the Holy Ghost is imparted upon the believer after a confession of faith in God.

One of the biggest differences between Christian faiths and Mormonism regard the importance of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon religion, in “restoring the true church.” As Protestants we disagree on that point. We base our beliefs on the Holy Scriptures which were originally written over 2000 years ago even though some were not transcribed onto paper until many decades later. We give no credence to “another book” handed by God to a mere human. When looking at this belief it is quite easy to understand why Mormonism could be considered a cult. In spite of this single belief, it seems that the faith, beliefs, and values of the Mormon Church are basically the same as the Christian, Protestant, and even Free Will Baptist divisions of God’s Church.

There is a big question to be asked about all politicians – can we believe them? If you believe the adage that asks how you know when as politician is lying and responds with “his lips are moving” then you would respond to the original question with a very adamant NO. Is Mister Romney truly dedicated to the Mormon faith and beliefs? Is he committed to his stated “Pro life” stance? These questions and many others have to be answered by each voting American before the ballots are cast. You, individually, have to decide if you believe the words coming out when this politician’s lips are moving. If you believe him the next decision is whether you agree with those views. Vote for the candidate that you believe in. Most importantly, be sure to vote. I strongly believe that if you don’t cast your ballot then you have no reason to complain because the election didn’t turn out the way you had hoped.
