Warning Signs of a Toxic Relationship

We may watch the foods that we consume in order to manage our weight and prevent disease and illness, but the health of our relationships impact our overall health as well. When a person is involved in a relationship that is not good for their overall well-being, they may find themselves susceptible to many diseases and illnesses due to the stress.

These bad relationships that are not good for our overall well-being are commonly referred to as toxic relationships. Many of us may find ourselves in a toxic relationship with a friend, family member, colleague, or spouse.

Here are warning signs that you may be involved in a toxic relationship:

The person is unsupportive of you and your decisions. The person makes critical comments towards you. You don’t feel you can trust the person. The person makes you feel guilty. The relationship is not an equal give-and-take. The person makes you feel judged and inadequate. You often feel unfulfilled and drained when around this person rather than content and fulfilled. You feel drained when associating with the person. The person continuously makes you angry. The person is manipulative towards you to get what they want. You feel that nothing you ever do is good enough for the person. The person makes you feel that they are the victim. The relationship is filled with drama and angst. You often feel threatened with the person. The person is heavily involved in gossip in a way that hurts you.

Healthy relationships should be safe, compassionate, respectful, able to discuss disagreements in a positive manner, and possess mutual caring. Both parties should be able to freely discuss their thoughts.

In a toxic relationship there is a base of insecurity with one party. One person will abuse their power and control, make harsh demands, have selfish motives, criticize, be negative in comments, be dishonest, be jealous of the other person, and give demeaning comments.

Healthy relationships will make you happy and energized, while toxic relationships will leave you feeling depressed and drained.
