Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

In the far off future, the world of man is ruled by a God like emperor that lives in a throne that sustains his life. There are millions upon millions of worlds inhabited by man. There is an interstellar army millions upon millions strong, and a genetically altered fighting force made of only the best of the best of normal man called Space Marines. Against the empire of man, is everyone. There are the ultra violent Orks, the sublime race called the Eldar that live on city sized ships that roam space, the evil forces of man known as Chaos and many more.

Space Marine pits you as Captain Titus. A leader of the Ultramarines chapter of the force of Space Marines. It is him, along with two of his best warriors that are responding to an Ork invasion on an important world to the Imperium. A world that makes the most powerful of fighting machines, Titans, that have the fire power to level entire cities. It is this Titan production facilities that the Orks are after so they can arm their equally massive and destructive Gargants. But the Orks are not alone in their assualt on the world. Against the Space Marines are also the forces of Chaos. There to take over the planet so that there is a gateway for evil to invade the realm of man and corrupt the innocent against the Emperor.

Space Marine gives you a 3rd person perspective shooter to guide you and your squad of Space Marines against these two forces to protect the Empire of Man. Game play is fairly simple, and unlike other 3rd person shooters, there is no emphasis on cover, as you are an indestructible warrior. You have the best armor, and the best weapons availlable to the armies of man. It is a kill or be killed environment, where often you are massively outnumbered. But don’t worry, along with your shooting weapons you have the capability to hack your foes to pieces in brutal melee combat.

The whole game is based off the Warhammer 40,000 table top minitaures war game and the Dawn of War RTS serices of games, also produced by Relic. The whole game for Space Marine can take several days to play as each mission is long, and each chapter (which there are 3 of) at several missions long. It is a great indepth game, that is hugely immersive. The only thing for me that drug me was the final segment, where it was just a press this button now and not an epic melee or gun fight like most of the other missions had been. The great thing about the ending is it did set up for more downloadable content like more missions, or even a second game!

Lacking from this game however, in my opnion the biggest hit against it, was the muliplayer. Relic has promised more content for it, but starting out with only 4 maps and only two ways to play was very lacking for a major release for a company.

For the scores I give the game way above average on the graphics because of the massive amount of gore. Being a table top player this is how I imagine the chainswords (yes this is a chainsaw as a sword!) to eviscerate Orks. I give it below average on the gameplay for the lack of starting multiplay content. Relic did an awesome job on the story so it gets above average marks for creativity and fun since the story of the singleplayer drives you to keep going.
