Using Plug in Light Fixtures for Your Design

When we think of lighting designs, we tend to think of built in light fixtures with light switches on the wall. But your lighting design certainly isn’t limited to fixed fixtures. That’s where plug in lighting comes into play in your interior design. Use this guide to plug in lighting and you’ll be sure to get the most out of your lighting design.

Table Lamps

One of the most common plug in style lighting fixtures is the table lamp. This elegant and interesting light is a great choice for lighting in living rooms, bedrooms and anywhere there are side or end tables. Used commonly as a task light, some table lamps are large enough to be used as an ambient light source. What’s really great about a table lamp is that the shades are very interchangeable, making design options unlimited and easy to swap out when old shades become dated.

Hanging Lights

Plug in style lights like pendant lights can add a distinct element with their power cords. Hanging lights with unique cords can really bring out the best in reading spaces, over dining tables, in corners and around breakfast nook spaces. Many times, vintage lighting sources can be found that can bring a retro kitchen or home office space to life. Hanging lights can also be used to define spaces like shared bedroom/office spaces when conventional lighting isn’t available.

Floor Lamps

Whether it’s a traditional tall metal floor lamp or a short and bright directional flood light, floor lamps are another perfect example of plug in lighting sources that work great in just about any space. Electrical cords can easily be hidden under rugs and carpets making them a versatile choice in any room design. The only place floor lamps aren’t good for are bathroom and kitchen lighting designs with limited floor space.

Chandeliers

Dining rooms and foyers are a great place to hang plug in lights like a chandelier. Many chandeliers are able to be hung from a simple eye hook in a stud or ceiling joist while the wire is discreetly tucked away in an attractive chain or cord. Pendant lighting that mimics the look of a chandelier can be used in large dining areas and foyers when mixed and matched together in groups.

Sconces

Wall sconces and other wall hanging light fixtures can easily be moved to any hallway without good lighting and plugged into an outlet. Small spaces and alcoves can also benefit from a wall type light source. Plugs can be covered using a matching colored sheath that is cut to fit to prevent anyone from tripping over loose cords.
