Troubleshooting a Faulty Dishwasher Hookup

Introduction
Dishwashers have many moving parts that can make troubleshooting these appliances a source of frustration. Many dishwasher problems can only be resolved by a qualified service technician. However, there are some basic issues that you, the homeowner, can find and repair yourself. A quick visual inspection of the unit will reveal any obvious problems. Contact a repair technician if these problems are beyond your ability to resolve.

Step 1
Turn on the dishwasher. Flip through each setting to see if it works anywhere, or, if it is completely dead.

Step 2
Open the dishwasher. Move each of the parts by hand to check for functionality. Look for obstructions and obviously damaged parts.

Step 3
Look under the kitchen sink. Locate the hoses that run to and from the dishwasher. Look for any disconnected or damaged pipes and hoses.

Step 4
Pull the dishwasher out from under the counter. Look at the back of the unit. Inspect the power cord attached to the back of the dishwasher for any signs of damage. Inspect the hoses that run in and out of the side of the dishwasher for obvious damage.

Tips
The hoses, pipes and cords that run in and out of your dishwasher are designed to be flexible. Improperly-installed dishwashers may be connected to rigid parts that will break when the unit is pulled out from under the counter. Use extreme caution when pulling your dishwasher out to inspect it.
