Backpack
I wish I would have had a backpack when I went to school. It would have eased my load of carrying 7 or 8 books at a time. Okay. Maybe I exaggerated a little. I carried possibly 5 or 6 books.
Black and White
As my children looked through our family photos, they observed black and white pictures. Yes, there was a time all photos were black and white only. Even the television showed black and white pictures.
Camera
ABC just talked about a new micro-camera about the size of a small capsule which can be swallowed. Once inside your body, the micro-camera will take pictures of your digestive system to be transmitted back to your doctor. It sells for about $1500.
Cell phones
It is common now to see individuals walking down the street talking on their cell phones. If we were to go back in time about 100 years ago, and someone saw you walking down the street talking on a cell phone. They probably would think you were crazy or you were from another planet. So many things are wireless. Now we can watch television on our cell phones or see individuals live. We can see each other live on the internet thanks to Skye and ooVoo. You can now conference calls, talk, and see several people at the same time. You might not be there, but it is almost like being there.
Games
There was a time games only came in a box. Now games are on the internet. Games are on our cell phones. We have iPods. We can play interactive games with the entire family on Xbox and the Wii.
Garter Belts
My children made another observation while browsing through our family photos. One of my classmates was showing her thigh on the picture. My daughter said, “What’s that thing on her thigh?” I replied, “It is a garter belt.” “It was used to hold her stockings up.” I explained that pantyhose did not exist then. Oh the use of modern conveniences.
Hair Products
Do you remember the straightening combs? I flinched many a day from getting burned from a straightening comb. What about curling irons, flat irons, and perms? Before that there was just naturally curly hair or as some might say “nappy hair.”
Heating
We now enjoy the luxuries of a gas furnace. All we need do is turn the thermostat up or down. I remember the black stoves that were centered in the middle of the room. I also remember standing close to it to keep warm.
Music
Do you recall the music records were 33 ½ rpm and 45 rpm. Now we have CD’s and DVD’s too. We can listen to them with earphones. We can walk around listening to our CD’s as well.
Outer Space
Who would have thought that men and women would travel to the moon?
Stoves and Refrigerators
Do you remember when stoves did not have a timer, or a grill on them? Do you remember when stove and refrigerators were not self-cleaning? I can remember having to put hot water and newspaper in the freezer area in an effort to defrost the refrigerator. Now that is just a thing of the past.
Vendor Machines
Do you remember when vendor machines were invented? Do you remember when we started getting pop from the vendor machines? You can get flowers, fruit, ice cream, live bait, pop, snack, DVDs, and much more now from vendor machines now. Times have changed.
