Timdiana Reviews: Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol

With the New Year on the horizon, there is still time for one more review; and what better film to review than the number one movie in the box office for the moment: “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol“. “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” is the fourth film in the “Mission Impossible” franchise, a series that I am not familiar with, but it seems unlikely that I am not missing much. The film has received a great reception with the likes of Rotten Tomato giving it a 93%. With such a high score, it could be considered one of the best films of the year; but is it one of the best films of the year? That is indeed the question. Your mission, should you choose to except it, is to read the review of “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol“.

The story of “Ghost Protocol” is the continuing mission of Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise. This time, however, he and his team are isolated due to the fact that the IMF was framed and disbanded; and it is up to them to not only clear their names, but save the world as well. Looking at this plot on paper, as well as seeing the advertisement, one could say that this could be a compelling plot. Unfortunately, what you see on paper is not what you see on the screen. What you are going to see is most likely as generic of spy plot as you can get as it is basically just spies on a mission and trying to stop madman from destroying the world. I maybe rusting on my info on this film franchise, but to me, I think this plot has been done before. This could have been an interesting espionage story. Instead, it turned out to be what you would see in the lowest of” James Bond” films.

As I sat there in the theatre and analyzed the characters, I came to one conclusion: Ethan Hunt is extremely dull. Sure he is a super spy, but that does not excuse not having good character development. The only two characters/actors who were compelling were Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg. Sure they had their peeves like Simon Pegg being the comic relief character, but at least they actually developed as the film progressed. Paula Patton’s character was pretty bland, while the villain was practically nonexistent. All I have to say is if was not for Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg, this factor would be dead in the water.

Despites the likes of story and characters turning out to be epic disappointments, there are some positives about this film. For starters, I thought the film’s cinematography was very stylish. Not to mention that there were believable moments. For example, when Ethan was hanging on the tower, I could believe the tension because it was shot well and it was directed properly. So I will not deny that there were exciting moments in “Ghost Protocol“.

Despite my complaints, I will admit that “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” is at least a fun action film.; but nothing more. Yes it as it positives like the stylish cinematography and the performances from Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg. However, everything else is mediocre and brings down anything that could have made the film worthwhile. Is “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” bad? No; but is it overrated. You better believe it.
