Three Outfit Ideas for an Indian Wedding

Indian weddings are gaudy, ostentatious and vibrant. The event is a celebration of textures, colors and patterns. With cross-cultural weddings gaining prevalence, I find several of my non-Indian friends a part of such revelries. As guests, many are excited and willing to try out the quintessential sari; however, I understand the attire requires practice and patience to carry it with grace and elegance. Also, many are unaware that Indian weddings run for hours. For such events, you need something that is stylish, colorful and extremely comfortable. Keeping the Indian patterns, hues and styles in mind, here are three outfit inspirations that will make you feel right in place.

Silk tunic with white pants

The ubiquitous tunic is chic and conservative, and with the right styling and embellishment, it can be easily transformed into a more formal ensemble. For a daytime Indian wedding, pair a silk tunic with white pants. Statement earrings, metallic pumps and a trendy clutch complete the look and provide the much-needed bling.

Appear poised and graceful by pairing Iveta silk tunic (Nordstrom, $395) with white cropped pants. The vibrant hued and the bold printed top is further accentuated by bead detailing. The stand-up collar and the split neck are elegant and chic. Accessorize with Kendra Scott chandelier earrings in smoky quartz (Nordstrom, $78) and Lauren Merkin croc embossed clutch (Nordstrom, $180).

Pleated maxi skirt and sequined top

A maxi skirt is similar to the traditional Indian lahenga, which is a much comfortable choice than a sari. Easy to wear and carry, a lahenga is extremely popular with the youngsters for its stylish freedom.

This INC accordion pleated skirt fits the Indian schema of things with it shimmering metallic gold hue and billowy silhouette. (Macy’s, $54.99) Pair it with a paillette sequined cowl neck top (INC, Macy’s, $54.99). Complete the look with a double-sided sequined scarf (INC, Macy’s, $29.99), gold hoop earrings, gold bangles and high-heeled sandals (Chinese Laundry, Macy’s, $49.98). A party-perfect choice for evening receptions!

Velvet dress

Just because it’s an Indian wedding, doesn’t mean that dresses can’t be in picture. The key is to find the right style and color that is not overshadowed by the others.

Step in style wearing this printed velvet dress that is stylish yet conventional (One World, Macy’s, $68). The peacock blue color is deep and warm, the fabric bright and vibrant and the length is comfortable and orthodox. Accessorize with chandelier earrings, long necklaces and bangles. Forego the boots and incorporate feminine sandals and pumps instead.

Indian weddings are usually traditional, so off-shoulders, strapless and halters are generally avoided. The emphasis is on rich hues, ethnic patterns and luxurious textures.
