Things You May Not Know About Your Favorite Comedies

Some comedy movies go into the archive never to be heard from again. Others live a life outside the box and take on a persona of their own. These funny films become part of the fabric of the tapestry of the décor of our lives. Repeated airings on television and popularity on the rental queue keep these comedies forever present in your lives. But, as with that dark secret of your Uncle Paul, there are some things about your favorite comedies that may come as a surprise.

Some Like It Hot

The ABC comedy “Work It”, and that generic term is used with the utmost looselessness, may have forever killed the concept of two guys dressing up as women. “Some Like It Hot” is the ultimate American comedy related to the longtime British comedic tradition of men dressing up in dresses. Hard it is to imagine any other actors than Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in the roles of the two musicians who join a female band to escape gangsters. But here’s something about “Some Like It Hot” you may not know: Billy Wilder actually Danny Kaye and Bob Hope before deciding on Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. Even worse: Lemmon’s role might have been played by Frank Sinatra if things hadn’t turned out for the better.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

There is something revolutionary about the big screen transformation of the Monty Python troupe that you probably never even took time to notice. If you were to sit down and watch half a season of the Monty Python TV series before firing up “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” you would almost certainly be aware of an element that makes the movie so strange as to be surreal. Look for it next time you enjoy those knights and such. Hint: men typically are the ones wearing the pants, but when it comes to the men of Monty Python, they are also the ones who wear the skirts. Only not in the movie. Breaking with tradition, the female parts are played women.

Groundhog Day

Bill Murray’s character manages to learn the piano like a pro as well as become proficient in a number of other things. The idea originally was that the total number of years to take place over the course of “Groundhog Day” would be 10,000. Since most people can’t live for 10,000 years even if they are living the same day over and over, this concept was shelved. According to the makers of the film, Murray’s character and the others are living the same day over for about 10 years of their lives.
