The Link Between Self-confidence and Career Advancement

Very few people are content to sit in the same job year after year without a chance for advancement. Even in factory work, those who do the labor recognize that some positions are more desirable than others. The opportunity for a change in job title is important to longevity with the same company. One form of advancement or another is needed for you to remain satisfied with your job. A key to getting the chance to advance is having a reasonable amount of self-confidence.

Self-confidence often translates into better job performance.

Most people realize that if you second guess yourself too often, it will lead to mistakes and weak performance. To do a truly good job, you have to have the confidence to take on the task at hand and believe that the result will be positive. This is not to say that you should be cocky or arrogant. The idea is to just believe that the job is not beyond your current skills or your ability to master new skills. The old adage that trying is half the battle rings true in this case.

Even before you go for a promotion, your positive self image will help you to generate ideas that will benefit production in your department.

Self-confidence is necessary in order to see beyond the task in front of you. Nearly everything in a workplace can be done differently and probably better than it is being done now. Companies rely on the front-line employees who do the work to be able to see ways to do the same jobs more efficiently or cheaper. Those who have the confidence to tell their superiors about ideas that they have for improving the workplace will usually be in the lead when names are being batted about for offering promotions to employees.

Believing in your ability to advance will give you the confidence to go after the job that you want.

A good rule for the employee that wants to advance is always make them say no. This means that you should never take yourself out the opportunity to advance. People frequently complain about being overlooked for promotions when the reality is that an application for the promotion was never made. With enough self-confidence, you will make sure that your name is in the pot when a promotion is about to be offered. Taking your own name out of the running is a sure way to always be left behind as others move up in the company.

If you trust yourself to do good work, you will not be afraid to make a switch to another employer if it is needed to for your career advancement.

Almost everyone has faced the situation where a coworker got the promotion. While this is frustrating, someone always loses when more than one person is trying to get the same job. Since bosses sometimes do have favorites, you may find that the only way to get ahead is to move on. This is also true in small companies where the same person has had the job that you want for the last two decades. Since you cannot get the promotion with this employer, good self-confidence will give you the ability to apply for and get your promotion with a different company.
