The Devil Wears Prada’s ‘Dead Throne’ is a Screaming Good Time, But..

I love what The Devil Wears Prada (TDWP) is doing with their genre, Christian Metalcore, but I find it really difficult to listen to screaming throughout an entire album. The parts when the band sings are great and the music is top notch. Each member contributes greatly to this up and coming band. However, the singing parts are far and few between; mostly you can find them in their choruses.

Having said that, I’ve had the opportunity to see the band live and meet a couple of the guys, with Bob Zerull writing up a couple interviews about TDWP. What is actually really impressive about TDWP are the lyrics of the songs. They are hard to make out due to the excessive screaming, but I managed to get a hold of the lyrics.

For example, in the song, “Born to Lose,” the first lines to the song are: “Blessed be those who have no idols. Invoke holy honor, sanctify the patient. I don’t see the world the same. I’m no one’s hero, so just forget my name.” If anything TWDP are great poets and they read like verses written for purely prose. I’d be interested to hear them in alternative music. Or on an altar somewhere during Sunday sermon.

This album isn’t for everyone; it wasn’t for me because, although I like some screaming, there has to be singing. If the entire album was like the choruses I’d find “Dead Throne” more enjoyable. But for the genre of Metalcore, The Devil Wears Prada nails it.
