The Curious Case of Jane Carrey, an American Idol Hopeful

Hollywood superstar Jim Carrey’s daughter auditioned for American Idol on last Sunday’s episode. That was breaking entertainment news because she was the first daughter of an A-list Hollywood actor to seriously contend for a shot at the title. In case you didn’t see her all over the news, she’s quite good, looks a lot like Miley Cyrus, and all three judges loved her. But perhaps even more surprising (to me at least) is that it was revealed that she’s been a waitress for the past six years. That’s right, 24 year-old Jane Carrey, daughter of gazillionaire Jim Carrey, has been working as a waitress ever since she turned 18.

Anything wrong with this picture? May be not to some. But it begs the question, is she waitressing to make ends meet? To put things in perspective, according to IMDb, Jim Carrey made a whopping $147 million dollars so far just for his movies and is a proud owner of a $25 million dollar airplane to boot. And, although Mr. Carrey divorced Jane’s mom, she remains his only daughter and they seemed quite close in the clips that were shown.

Interestingly, in this A.I. episode, you could hear John Mayer singing “Fathers, be good to your daughters” while Jane Carrey’s story was being narrated. Was that a direct jab from the A.I. producers to Jim Carrey for not being good to his daughter? There certainly wasn’t any mention of what Mr. Carrey did for his daughter besides giving her the famous last name that she has to live up to. To thicken the plot, we were also told that Jane has a son, which makes the storyline of a struggling mom, daughter of a Hollywood legend trying to make it in the entertainment biz, even more tantalizing. This is probably going to make very good TV.

May be I’m old fashioned. May be I think differently but you can bet that if I made that much money and can afford a $25 million dollar airplane, my baby daughter wouldn’t be working for tips as a waitress. Not that there’s anything wrong with being a waitress, as it is as honest a job as you can get. But the thought of her cleaning up after customers and collecting a few dollars to put in a tip jar while her father is living la vida loca in his Beverly Hills mansion and jetting across country in his $25 million dollar airplane just bugs the heck out of me. I don’t profess to know their whole story, and I’m dying to find out more in future A.I. episodes. Especially when Jane goes to her dad’s stomping ground, Hollywood, for the elimination round. But I can tell you one thing in the mean time, my sentiment is with John Mayer when he sings that fathers should be good to their daughters. And it could be the subplot brewing here, that Mr. Carrey may not have been that good of a father to his daughter. Stay tuned, as they say.
