The American Flag a Symbol of Country’s Greatness

Yahoo! is asking Americans how September 11 changed them. Below is an account from a reader.

I was not there on 9/11, and I did not lose anyone, I think. Losing touch with family and friends over the years one can never be sure.

The only thing that happened to me was my flag was stolen. I am retired military, 26 years, and flew my flag on all appropriate days. After 9/11, I flew it every day until the 14th and then it was gone. Needless to say I was extremely angry if I was writing here what I said then 90 percent would be censored.

[Your story: How has September 11 changed you?]

My daughter-in-law told my story to a local TV station and they contacted me, wanting to tell my story of a stolen flag. At first I refused, after all what is a stolen flag compared to the suffering in New York. They told me I was not alone other flags had been stolen including the one a widow of a World War ll veteran. I relented and told my short story accompanied by 2 of my grandsons during the interview.

Naturally I tried to replace my flag but it being 4 days after the 11th there were none to be found in any store. Once again the TV station entered the picture and put me in contact with an organization that normally would look for damaged or wore out flags and replace them. This organization offered to replace my stolen flag and the TV station wanted to tape it. Arrangements were made and I was there at the time and place agreed upon. There I was — a Lutheran, next to me a woman of Jewish standing faith in the courtyard of a Catholic Church and each of us being presented a flag by the Knights of Columbus.

Only in America.
