The Advantages & Disadvantages of Extreme Couponing

For some people, extreme couponing may be worth the tedious hours spent to cut out the special deals. I have seen shows on television where some people do spend very little money on their weekly grocery shopping. They have a carriage full of food and other items, and their total bill is only a few dollars. This sounds good, but it is not for everyone even though everyone would love to spend that little on groceries.

In today’s world where there does not seem to be enough time to get important things done, I cannot see how anyone would have time to do this. It literally takes hours and hours to look through different circulars from the stores or from those who come in the mail.

On the other hand, I see people buying 50 bottles of ketchup or 100 bottles of barbecue sauce. If you think of it, these people are paying very little for these items or practically getting them for free. Therefore, they feel as if they are getting a great deal, which they are. Do they really need that many bottles of one item though? These products do have an expiration date and if not used soon enough, these will have to be thrown away eventually. What good is that?

Those who are into this hobby should really consider giving certain products away to food banks or shelters in the area. Then it would not go to waste. To just keep them on a shelf in the basement and let them expire, is really a shame when there are millions of people starving in this world.

This also does not work for those who buy organic or healthier foods. Unfortunately, there are not coupons for stores such as Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods Market. It seems as though there are plenty of coupons for processed and junk foods.

This may work for certain families, but I think in certain cases extreme couponing has become an addiction for some. If someone has the time and patience for it, I say kudos to them. It is definitely not something for everyone.
