Surviving the Day

Well this it thought Charlie as he dodged another clawed paw, his wings felt like they were going to give out at any moment. There were just too many cats and looking around he could see there were very few birds left in the bird refuge. One cat caught Charlie’s eyes in particular and it was because it was possibly the biggest orange cat he had ever seen and oh yeah there was a blue feather hanging out of its mouth.
Charlie under normal circumstances was not a very good flier for a robin, but with all the cats chasing him he was even worse. Trying to look around for a safe place to rest and navigate through the horde of cats seemed almost impossible to Charlie, but he had no other options.

Just when he thought he was a goner Charlie noticed a large oak tree standing several feet taller then all of the other trees. With the last little bit of strength he had left Charlie flapped his wings to get higher in the air, which was not an easy thing to do when you are not a very good flier. Finally with a relieved sigh he made it to the very tip top of the large tree. Taking in deep gulping breaths of air Charlie could hear his heart pounding and was pretty sure he could see it trying to beat out of his chest. It took a little while but when he felt like he had his breathing under control Charlie looked down at the scene below him.

Feathers in many colors scattered the ground, it almost looked pretty except he knew that the feathers were of the less fortunate birds. In some of the trees further away Charlie could see other birds looking around frightened and not sure what to do. Cats were now desperate to get to the few survivors and were trying to climb the trees but they had eaten too much and were to fat to get very high up. Some of the cats were just lying down in the sun licking their paws clean. Charlie was not sure what to do, but he needed to be brave and do something since all the other birds were frozen with fear.

Hopping from branch to branch Charlie tried to find a solution when a little old lady who was the caretaker came walking out of her house. Quickly devising a plan Charlie waited and made sure all of the cats were busy before he stretched out his wings and took flight. The wind acted as if it new Charlie’s plan for it gave him a boost and within moments he landed on the care takers shoulder. The care taker was shocked at first when Charlie began to speak but then she smiled warmly at him.

“Why are you letting these cats eat all of the birds? Isn’t this supposed to be a safe place for birds to live?”

The old lady stuttered a little bit before she replied, “Well yes this is supposed to be a place for the birds to be safe, but someone dropped of a mama cat and I couldn’t turn her away. Then more cats were left and they had more and before I knew it I was overrun with cats. They have no place to go and I can’t turn them away.”

Charlie thought about this for a moment before he asked her, “Why don’t you divide the refuge up and have one side be for the cats and the other side for the birds? Then I think if you would feed the cats several times a day they would not try and come after the birds?”

The old lady smiled and agreed with Charlie so she quickly separated the cats into another part of the refuge. It did not take very long for word to get out how Charlie had saved the refuge and managed to survive the day.
