St. Patrick’s Day Planning: What Are the Best Irish Pubs Iowa City?

IOWA CITY, IA. – With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner on March 17, it’s time to start thinking about where you want to hang out and celebrate the holiday if you’re in the Iowa City area.

Home to the University of Iowa and a very diverse culture, Iowa City has no shortage of bars and pubs, but you can’t just go to a bar that’s selling green beer on St. Patrick’s Day. You have to do the holiday right and find a pub that serves a variety of Irish whiskeys, where the bartender knows how to properly draw a pint of Guinness and with just the right amount of froth at the rim of the glass!

Donnelly’s is one such place. Located at 110 College Street in the Ped Mall area, Donnelly’s pours a good stout, complete with the clover leaf in the foam. They also have a good selection of Irish whiskeys and the prices are inexpensive, some would even say cheap. And if you don’t go to Donnelly’s for the Guiness, go for the rueben sandwich, it’s the best in town! On Wednesday’s the pub runs a crowd pleasing special of a half rueben sandwich paired with some Irish stew. Yum! You can start celebrating at 11am, eat drink and be merry until 2am and parking is available in a ramp nearby.

Flannigan’s in neighboring Coralville features some Irish tradition along with 1/2 pound burgers! Nestled on the west bank of the Iowa River at 501 1st Avenue, in Coralville, Flannigans is a great neighborhood bar where locals stop after work for a bite to eat and take in a game on the telly. The prices are fair and the oreo cheesecake is quite tasty! There’s ample parking and when the weather is nice you can take a scenic walk over the river.

Featuring a monumental 130+ year old bar made of oak is Micky’s Irish Pub & Grill . The bar itself is worth the visit, truly something to marvel at from all angles and many a stout have been poured and served from it. It’s a bit of a landmark in Iowa City. Micky’s runs a food & drink special of one kind of another everyday and also serves breakfast worth taking in on the weekends. They serve a mean Bloody Mary and the burgers like the bar, are worth checking out. Free popcorn is always available to nibble on 2pm to 2am daily, and on St. Patrick’s Day, there’s sure to be an Irish music session going on. Located at 11 South Dubuque Street in Iowa City, Micky’s is good food, cold beer, good people and great fun.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
