Special Olympics Scarves Project

If you knit or crochet, your Special Olympics organization needs your help!

Handmade scarves are needed to give to our Special Olympics athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters.

This is a countrywide endeavor and every state has a quota they would like to fill for the 2012 season.

Guidelines for the scarves are as follows:

Must be Red Heart Super Saver 387 Soft Navy / 319 Cherry Red or Red Heart Soft 4604 Navy / 9925 Really Red.

These are the only colors you can use and you must use both a blue and a red combination in any pattern you choose.

Yarn can be found at Herrschners, Joann Fabrics or you can order online at www.shopredheart.com.

The scarf must be 54-60 inches long and about 6 inches wide (which is 30 knit stitches per row).

When you’re finished, put each scarf in an individual Ziploc bag for sanitary reasons. You can ship multiple scarves in the same box as long as each scarf is in it’s own bag. You can mail by UPS or your local Post Office.

Check out the Special Olympics Scarves Project 2012 website at scarvesforspecialolympics.org for the mailing address for each state. Listed below is the Minnesota shipping site.

Navigate around and find out when the deadline for your state is. Some are in December, others go until March. Don’t be discouraged if you find your state has all the scarves they need when you’re ready to mail off your handiwork. Take a look at the other states who are short of their goals and send your package to them.

This official website for Special Olympics also has tips on designs and patterns, the history of how this project came to be and inspiring photos.

This is a wonderful project you can do in front of the tv and it’s at minimal cost to you. Make it a family event or get together with friends to socialize and let the Special Olympics participants know you support their efforts.
