Simple Way to Make Angel Wings in a Day

A pair of angel wings for a costume can be made with cardboard, artificial feathers, elastic and glue. Scissors or a utility knife can be used to cut out the cardboard. You can use two sides of a cardboard box to make your wings; one wing for each side. Ask your grocery store if they have any boxes. Look for artificial feathers in the arts & crafts section of a store and the elastic in the sewing and crafts sections.

Use a marker to draw the shape of your wings. Cut the wings out. Instead of eyeballing both wings to match them as close to the same size…draw one wing on cardboard, cut it out, and use it to pattern the second wing. Sit the first wing on a piece of cardboard and trace around it; then cut your second wing out.

Glue the feathers on the cardboard. Glue the feathers from their bottom down, side by side, so that the large end of the feathers hang downwards; just as they would appear if you held a feather duster by the handle allowing the feathers to fall downward instead of upward.

Glue the feathers on one side of the wings and let them dry before turning the wings over to finish gluing on the rest of the feathers.

You may be able to match the color of the elastic to the color of your wings.

Cut two pieces of equal size elastic, large enough to slip over the arm and shoulder. The elastic should be cut small enough that it will rest under the armpit and stay in place. Glue both sides of one piece of elastic to the inside of one of the wings in a half moon. Repeat with the second wing.

You can glue one large strip of elastic in a connecting circle on both wings so that it can be slipped over the body to rest underneath the armpits.

Because you can make angel wings in any color you want; You can be good or bad. Red may be your choice for devil wings; a black, brown and green blend might be perfection for an angel of camouflage; and gold and silver may best represent an angel of brilliance. Boys can wear wings of blue while girls may wear wings of pink.

Alongside additional color choices, the addition of feathers provides a more realistic feel to angel wings than that of wrapping cutout cardboard in foil. Cardboard alone would make drab wings.
