SEC West is 2011 College Football Best: LSU, Alabama, & Arkansas

SEC fans are truly enjoying the AP rankings right now. That’s because according to the AP poll, LSU is currently ranked #1, Alabama is currently ranked #2, and Arkansas is ranked #3.

Captain Obvious has just informed me that this means the SEC West will be supplying one or two teams for the BCS National Championship game.

According to AP Sports writer, Ralph Russo, this accomplishment has only happened one other time in the history of the AP Rankings. In 1971, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Colorado were ranked 1,2, and 3 in the Big Eight Conference.

In recent weeks past, the college football fans watched as #1 ranked LSU, played #2 ranked Alabama in what some called the Biggest Game Ever. It was very evident in this game that these were two very good teams, playing excellent defense, allowing no touchdowns scored. More details about that game can be read here.

What may shock some is that these two teams may match up again in the BCS National Championship game, if all of the stars align perfectly.

Two Tiger Teams Must Lose for Alabama to go to SEC Championship
Sports Illustrated writer, Stewart Mandel, pointed out the best scenario for Alabama fans. If Alabama beats the Auburn Tigers in their final college football regular season game, and if Arkansas beats the LSU Tigers in their final regular season game, then Alabama would most likely go on to play Georgia in the SEC Championship game. But the most likely scenario, as Mandel points out, is that LSU will beat Arkansas, and will win the SEC Championship game and will go on to play Alabama in the BCS National Championship game.

So let me spell out what appears to be unfolding late in the 2011 College Football Season: It is not a question of if an SEC team will be going to the BCS National Championship game, it is a question of which SEC team will win the BCS National Championship game.
