Review: Our Family Brand American Cheese Slices

A couple weeks ago, my wife and I held a birthday party for our two daughters and, after some discussion about the type of food that should be served for the dozen or so guests we were expecting, we decided to keep things simple by making hotdogs and hamburgers.

On the day of the party, I had to run to the store to pick up a couple last second things and, as I was leaving, my wife told me to pick up some American cheese slices for the burgers (figuring kids would prefer cheeseburgers). Unfortunately, by the time we had reached that point, we were already over budget and, because we didn’t have a whole lot of money left to spend, I had to search for the cheapest brand available. That ended up being a package of American cheese slices from the Our Family brand.

Ironically, despite the fuss my wife made over the cheese, we forgot to take it out of the fridge during the party (we were too busy keeping an eye on one of the guests who was proving to be a little brat). As a result, the package remained un-opened until very recently; when we used up the cheese that was already opened and finally got around to trying this brand.

I honestly am not impressed.

Since we go through a lot of American cheese in our house (our youngest daughter eats it constantly), I have had quite a few different brands of it and have found there is a difference in taste; especially when it comes to the cheaper brands. Despite this, most of the cheaper brands are still decent. I couldn’t say that about this one.

I actually didn’t get a chance to try any of this cheese until yesterday, when I was making a grilled cheese sandwich for our youngest daughter (she didn’t nap during the day and I wanted to feed her early just in case she fell asleep on the couch). I didn’t like it at all. I was expecting to taste cheese and the only thing I could taste was salt. This salty flavor only got stronger when the cheese melted on her sandwich.

And, I’m apparently not the only one who noticed this since, once again, my daughter left quite a bit of the cheese uneaten. She actually was doing that before and I just assumed she wasn’t hungry (like I said, she loves American cheese normally) but, after trying it myself, I now think it is the flavor.

This brand of American cheese might be cheaper but there is a reason for it. I do not recommend it as a result.
