Recap: ‘Once Upon a Time,’ Season 1, Episode 5, ‘That Small Voice’

“Once Upon a Time,” Season 1, Episode 5, “That Small Voice” begins with a small boy in the fairy tale world snatching purses and picking pockets while the townsfolk watch an amusing puppet show.

His name is Jiminy and he is a gypsy. Expect complaints from the Romani community about stereotyping. Spoilers surely follow.

In the real world, Emma’s accepting the post of Deputy Sheriff coincides with a seismic event centered at an old abandoned mine. Henry is pretty sure that the mine contains some sort of dark secret, which is a concern for Emma, the mayor, and Archie, Jiminy’s analogue in the real world, and the town shrink, albeit for different reasons. The mayor orders Archie to change his therapy in order to crush Henry’s “delusions,” which has the effect of sending Henry into the mines to find evidence that they are not delusions. Archie follows the kid and they find themselves trapped together, with the townsfolk outside trying to find ways to rescue them.

In the fairy tale world, Jiminy, now an adult, is trying to find ways to get away from his grifting, thieving parents. He makes the unwise decision to make a deal with Rumplestiltskin for a magic potion that can be sprayed on his parents to help him get away. Unfortunately, his parents switch the potion for a vial of rain water and sell it to a young couple in the guise of an “elf potion” that will cure the plague. Instead it turns them into puppets.

Filled with remorse, Jiminy makes a wish upon a star. The Blue Fairy appears and turns him into a cricket. He will now be able to befriend the son of the couple he inadvertently turned into puppets, a lad who will become Gepetto.

In the real world, stuck in the mines, Henry and Archie have a conversation about doing what is right and having a conscience. While this is going on, Emma manages to find an air shaft and has herself lowered to rescue the boy and the shrink. Archie then informs the mayor that he will treat Henry his way and she had better learn to like it. Also, crickets appear in Storybrook.

There is a subplot of Mary Margaret (aka Snow White) and Dave (aka the Prince) bonding. However, perceiving that a romance with a married man (or so she has been led to believe) goes nowhere, she tenders her resignation at the hospital as a volunteer.

And the deep, dark secret of the mine seems to be a pile of broken glass at the bottom. The significance of this will likely be revealed in due course.
