Quentin Tarantino: My Favorite Movie Director

I tend to see a lot of movies. I got my degree in Theatre (Media emphasis) at Cerritos Community College, and I worked at a movie theatre for almost three years, so I saw parts of almost every movie there and learned to appreciate the film-making process. You can sometimes tell who the director is just by looking at the movie — how it’s edited, the story line, etc. Quentin Tarantino is one such director who you can always tell is the director of a movie and puts a lot of the unexpected into his movies. He is my favorite director.

I think my favorite movie of his has got to be Pulp Fiction. As you watch this movie, the action draws you in. Even at points in the movie where you would think you shouldn’t laugh, Tarantino makes you laugh (remember Vincent Vega shooting Marvin in the face when his gun accidentally fires while driving? Hilarious!). His movies are quirky, but you can see how much thought is put into everything in the movie. There are so many subtleties in his movies that you sometimes need to see the movie more than once to “get” it. Tarantino’s IQ is 160 despite dropping out of high school, so his intelligence shows through in his movies.

Another favorite of mine is the episode of ER that he directed called “Motherhood.” I always liked ER but having Tarantino direct it was great, and of course, he put his mark on the episode. I remember a scene with Dr. Susan Lewis and Nurse Carol Hathaway walking slowly down the corridor of the hospital, looking very cool and hip with dark sunglasses on!

He tends to put together his movies in such a way that one never knows how the ending will come about. All the sub stories in Pulp Fiction looked as if they were not related to anything else in the movie, but at the end, you see how it comes together, and you think, “Of course!” The same with Inglourious Basterds, another favorite of mine. Even though Tarantino detests both, there are always drugs and violence in his movies, and the violence is quite graphic (the scalping scenes in Inglourious Basterds). He also almost always makes a cameo appearance in each of his films.

He has two upcoming movies — 2012’s Django Unchained starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson, and Kill Bill Vol. 3, to be out sometime in 2014. I’m excited to see both of them!
