Prepare Your Child for Their First Dental Visit

When should your child see a dentist for the first time?

It is recommended to have a first dental checkup at age four, which should then take place at least once a year. The first dental appointment is crucial for teaching your child about the dentist, and maintaining good oral hygiene. For some children, the whole process can be a scary experience. But with a little bit of planning, it doesn’t have to be.

What to expect

The dentist will inspect your child’s mouth carefully, looking for any sign of decay or other potential problems. A good dentist will take the time to get to know your child and answer any question the new patient (or parents) may have. The visit is usually short, and may be followed by a cleaning by the dental hygienist.

How to prepare for the first dental visit

If at all possible, take your child with you on one of your routine visits. Have a relaxed attitude. Your child picks up on your own fears. If there isn’t any cause for concern in their mind prior to their first visit, they will not be scared of the dentist when their turn comes.

If you cannot take your child to one of your own dental visits, role play might prove very helpful. Demystify the three things that can cause a child to be scared at the dental office:

the dental chair
the tools
the dentist

Time to see the dentist

Try to schedule your child’s first appointment to the dentist’s office at a time when you are not going to be under stress. Tell your child about the appointment the previous day. A child will look forward to applying in real life the skills they have learned while playing. Get there a bit early to fill out the “new patient” paperwork. Go in with your child and watch them surprise you with their nonchalance and a final “that was fun”. The hygienist will give your child a goody bag, with dental floss, new brushes, and maybe a special surprise. The both of you will be looking forward to your next visit.
