Places to Attend Choreography School

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 12,000 choreographers in the United States. Getting a job as a choreographer is much easier for those who successfully complete a course of study in choreography school. Those who complete their choreography education can work as dance teachers or choreograph live shows or dance segments on television or the movies.

One way of breaking into the business as a choreographer is to major in dance in college. Dance degree programs will contain a number of choreography classes. This is certainly not the only way to get a choreography education. However, it does allow for a more well-rounded education than a specific choreography school. You will learn more dance theory and history in a full college degree program, and those seeking a career as a dancer can take performance classes in dance programs, as well.

Of course, anyone who has a dancing career also has a possible advantage in becoming a choreographer, as well. Having that background is certainly not required. Choreographers tend to be dancers, but they do not have to be great dancers who had a professional-level career in dance. It is just that having a career as an actual dancer is a great way to make contacts in the industry and eventually become a choreographer. This sometimes occurs even without going to choreography school.

U.S. College Search lists a number of dance colleges and universities. Some of these schools are specific to dance and other performing arts, while others are part of a large university. However, this is not remotely close to the overall number of dance degree programs for which you can start to get a choreographer education. Most major universities have a dance degree program. The GradSchools website even lists more than 100 dance graduate programs.

Actual choreography schools are not common. As described above, it is much more common to attend dance schools and learn choreography while learning as a dancer or to attend college and major in dance. These are the major routes to choreography schooling and education. Individuals with experience in production in the entertainment industry may also have an advantage in getting some choreography jobs by just knowing the right people in the industry.
